- W2318496752 abstract "The article on Lady Jane Grey in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography hints at a more interesting and even ‘disturbing’ young woman than the meek victim who features in popular memory. Jane maintained a steely composure in captivity that would have been remarkable in anyone facing execution for treason, let alone an innocent sixteen-year-old abandoned by her father and husband. Eric Ives’s penetrating study, published in 2009 and now available in paperback, is properly sensitive to the injustice of Jane’s situation. But this is far more than a rehearsal of a tragic story. A distillation of a career’s-worth of research into the personalities of the Tudor court, this book is also a master-class in how to read the historical record. The Greys were second-rank gentry with a taste for Protestant humanism, their brick-built house at Bradgate Park ‘the principal aristocratic nursery of reform in England’. What lifted their prospects, and then brought them to ruin, was their descent from Henry VIII’s sister Mary via her marriage to Charles Brandon. An exact contemporary of Edward VI, Jane was tutored in scripture and the classics by the family chaplain, John Aylmer. One story has her reading Plato while the rest of the household went out hunting, although Jane was also inducted into the pageantry of court life, taking her place among the aristocratic women who welcomed Mary of Guise in 1551. Henry VIII’s will had identified the female Greys as potential transmitters of the Tudor royal line, and Thomas Seymour’s eye fell on Jane as a future bride for the young king. Edward, however, had plans of his own." @default.
