- W2318732904 abstract "Objective The main purpose of this analysis was to compare the serum alkaline phosphatase level and bone mineral density (BMD) measurements among two groups of women: group I using hormonal oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) versus group II (controls or nonuser). Study design An analytical cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in collaboration with the Department of Radiology of Al Maadi Military Hospital to define any relationship between OCPs, BMD, and serum alkaline phosphatase. Patients and methods A total of 60 healthy women were selected nonrandomly. The age range was 25–35 years. They were divided into two groups: one using combined OCPs for 12 months (cases or users; n=30) and the other group had never used any hormonal contraceptives (controls or nonuser; n=30). Bone density of the 60 women was measured in the spine, right femur, and left femur using Dexa Scan General Electric Health Care Lunar Prodigy DF+301030 Machine. Serum alkaline phosphatase was measured using autoanalyzer method (normal level=30–120 U/l). Results It was found in this study that OCP users had higher level of mean serum alkaline phosphatase (139±51.2 U/l) and lower mean BMD (spine 1.03±0.18, right femur 0.88±0.17, left femur 0.87±0.18) compared with nonusers who had lower level of mean serum alkaline phosphatase (109±38.1 U/l) and higher mean BMD (spine 1.12±0.14, right femur 0.97±0.11, left femur 0.98±0.12). These data indicate that OCP users had elevated bone turnover, which appears to adversely influence BMD and fracture risk. Conclusion Prolonged use of current OCPs may adversely impact young adult women’s bone density." @default.
