- W2318751736 abstract "Event Abstract Back to Event The influence of discourse events on verb integration and noun expectations: an ERP study on german Florian Niefind1*, Heiner Drenhaus1 and Matthew W. Crocker1 1 Saarland University, Germany Previous studies have suggested that verb information triggers expectancies, as reflected in a reduction of effect size of the N4 (Metusalem et al., 2010). However, it remains unclear what role the discourse context plays in constraining these expectancies. By manipulating fit between the verb and the context, we investigated both the integration of the verb and its characteristics. We presented a context followed by a sentence containing either a fitting or non-fitting verb and a fitting/non-fitting noun (A-D). A centro-parietal negativity was induced at the verb (A&B versus C&D), showing an integration effect. The noun comparison highlighted that fit of the verb did not modulate the size of the N400 at the noun (A versus B compared to C versus D). Interestingly, A against B showed a P600-like positivity, whereas C versus D did not show it. The findings suggest that the N400 reflects a general integration with context, while the P600 reveals the interaction between contextual and verbal information (cf. Kuperberg, 2010). Context: Als Jan am Wasserkasten vorbeikommt, will er etwas trinken. When Jan walks past a waterbox, he wants to drink something. A) Deshalb oeffnet er die Flasche mit aeusserster Sorgfalt [verb and noun contextually supported]. Therefore he opens the bottle carefully. B) oeffnet - Fenster [verb contextually supported, noun contextually unsupported] opens – window. C) schliesst - Flasche [verb contextually unsupported, noun contextually supported] closes – bottle. D) schliesst - Fenster [verb and noun contextually unsupported] closes – window.
