- W2318785561 abstract "As a distinguished pioneer in chemistry, as a Unitarian divine and theologian, as a materialistic philosopher, as the defender of free speech and rational conduct?a defense which brought him almost within sight of martyrdom?in all these ways, Dr. Priest ley is remembered by the educated world. As a writer on edu cation he has been long neglected, although his views deserve at tention on their own account and perhaps even more on account of the marvelous currency they attained when they were re minted and re-issued just a century after Priestley had first put them in circulation. new coinage bore the name and stamp of none other than Herbert Spencer. Of the four papers now comprising Spencer's volume on the first to be published was entitled The Art of Education. It now forms the second chapter of the volume and is called Intellectual Education. third chapter is on Moral Education, and the fourth on Physical Education. One may remark that here Spencer has placed last what, in his theory, is of first and paramount importance. His skill in exposition never failed him, but the seasoned reader of educational literature will find little that is novel or brilliant in these three chapters. Most of the ideas are taken from Rousseau, whom Spencer had not read, and from Fellenberg, Bacon, Richter, Combe, and especially from Pestalozzi. In many cases the views are credited to their authors, but the style and the illustrations are Spencer's. Otherwise there is little that is new. With the first and introductory chapter entitled, What Knowledge Is of Most Worth? matters are quite different. In this section no credit is given to anyone except for two or three subordinate statements. By implication Spencer admits his origi nality, and the main argument has always been credited to him. 325" @default.
