- W2319313776 abstract "SUMMARY THE STUDY OF PLANT COMMUNITIES BY THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF CORRELATIONS BETWEEN SPECIES AND ECOLOGICAL VARIABLES: AN EXAMPLE The basic principles of the study of plant communities by the analysis of correlations between species and ecological variables were discussed in the June issue of Biometrics (Dagnelie [1965]). This second paper will illustrate these principles with a concrete example, which has already been presented at the Fifth International Biometric Conference (Cambridge, 1963). It consists in the analysis of a set of 43 samples of vegetation taken in Belgium in Calluna vulgaris heaths. Examination of the correlation matrix between 46 species shows the samples to be markedly heterogeneous from a floristic point of view. Factor analysis of this matrix reveals two highly significant factors and enables us in particular to define an important group of characteristic species, closely correlated and with" @default.
