- W2319712922 abstract "The objective of the study is to test the predictive capability of a newly developed continuum-rarefied flow solver called Unified Flow Solver (UFS) for computing expanding nozzle and plume flows that contain both continuum and transitional flow regimes. Numerical simulations are presented of steady state flow of nitrogen in hypersonic expanding nozzle and a subsequent plume flow at relatively high density reservoir conditions for the nozzle. The full Boltzmann and kinetic continuum solvers in UFS were invoked as appropriate to the flow regime to perform the simulations. The particular nozzle flow was selected for availability of experimental temperature measurements. A well-established statistical kinetic-based code, SMILE, a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) solver was used to provide reference solutions in the plume region. Detailed flowfield physics and computational resources used by both solvers are presented." @default.
