- W2319985852 abstract "In the turmoil of the recent and present changes and transformations in eastern Europe, people of the region try to conceive of themselves as prospective central Europeans. By 'central Europe', they generally mean an acceptance by, or incorporation into, a somewhat mystical Europe. In that process the rule of law, or Rechtsstaat-type legalism1 are emphasized both as a means to protect society and human rights against an all-pervasive state (party) domination, and to promote or further a market economy which is believed to be the solution to the present crisis. As will be mentioned briefly, these dominating ideas are generally simple negations of the former system, and the term 'market' is often used as an attractive, but unspecified, promise. There is little desire to pay the social price of a market-oriented transformation. I will try to point out that there is a similar reluctance when it comes to taking law and the rule of law seriously. The two 'negative' attractions are interrelated." @default.
