- W2320001571 abstract "After Horace Mann returned from touring schools in Europe in 1843, he published an influential report praising not just European curricula and teacher training but also the Prussian oral method of teaching deaf students. “The power of uttering articulate sounds, of speaking as others speak, alone restores [a deaf person] to society,” Mann averred (p. 148). Because American schools for the deaf at that time uniformly used sign language, Mann's words represented the opening salvo in what would later become a broad campaign against sign language in American culture. In Words Made Flesh, R. A. R. Edwards convincingly argues that oralism in the United States began not after the Civil War, as scholars have contended, but two decades earlier, when Mann asserted that the ability to speak vocally makes people more human. Edwards offers several such valuable corrections in her study. Since the appearance of Harlan Lane's groundbreaking study When the Mind Hears: A History of the Deaf (1984), scholars have gradually uncovered more aspects of the emergence of a signing deaf community in nineteenth-century America. By introducing new archival evidence, discussing it skillfully, and connecting it to current deaf and disability theory, Edwards reveals intriguing elements of this story, which relates to America's larger struggle over disability, normality, and difference." @default.
