- W2320002757 abstract "Beam structures have been widely used in major load-carrying members in many engineering applications (e.g., spar structures in rotorcraft blades and wind-turbine blades), and therefore, many beam theories have been reported in the literature. In these studies, there are two keywords, shear deformation and torsional warping restraint. The former is associated with a Rankine-Timoshenko (RT) beam theory, the latter is related to a Vlasov (V) beam theory. These classical theories are well established for isotropic beams with simple cross-sectional geometry. Due to emerging high performance composite materials, the analysis and design of anisotropic beams with arbitrary cross-sectional geometry becomes inevitable for a composite tailoring. Although there are many anisotropic beam theories in the literature, asymptotic beam theories and associated ones are reviewed for the sake of brevity. The comprehensive reviews and assessment can be found in the surveys. An asymptotic method is a mathematically rigorous means to analyze the beam structures, which is often used to the classical approximation in order to obtain the homogenized material properties (or equivalent beam stiffness). Many works have been done for a classical beam theory via the asymptotic method. For the higher-order effects, such as shear deformations, solving of the recursive system equations is required in general. In addition to this, the asymptotically correct boundary conditions are essential to accurately capture the shear deformation, which are not favorable in practice. To circumvent this, Yu et al. developed a Timoshenko-like beam model based on the variational asymptotic method, in which the degrees of freedom are the same as a traditional RT model. This work is recently updated to correct some coefficients in the beam stiffness matrix. Based on the same asymptotic foundation, the approach was extended to a Vlasov beam model. These models work well for many engineering problems; however, it may not predict accurately some problems, such as for a composite box beam with bending-shear couplings. The objective of this research is to develop a beam theory that is able to predict the composite coupling characteristics of the beams. The strategies to construct such a beam theory are listed as follows:" @default.
