- W2320031974 abstract "Postnatal growth and development of thermoregulation were studied in young from nine litters of Belding ground squirrels, Spermophilus beldingi beldingi, a hibernator, and five litters of antelope ground squirrels, Ammospermophilus leucurus leucurus, a nonhibernator. Morphological measurements, physical appearances, and notable developmental events were recorded until the squirrels were 45 days of age. The development of homeothermy was studied by subjecting young squirrels to ambient temperatures of 10°C and 15°C for specific time intervals, measuring their body temperature, and recording behavioral responses. Full thermoregulatory capabilities appeared by day 25 in S. b. beldingi and day 45 in A. l. leucurus. At this time the young squirrels had attained 30 percent (S. b. beldingi) and 36 percent (A. l. leucurus) of adult body weight, possessed a pelage resembling that of the adult, and were weaned. Early growth and development of thermoregulation of S. b. beldingi is accelerated and adaptive in that it enables early emergence from the natal burrow and attainment of body size and fat reserves necessary for survival during hibernation." @default.
