- W2320105892 abstract "Many of Dr. Richmond's comments appear to be addressing different issues than those of our paper (1)-as such it does not seem reasonable to discuss extensive additional topics in the forum of Letters to the Editor. It certainly was not our intention to review the literature thoroughly, and we definitely emphasized comparisons of relatively low and intermediate doses appropriate to survival curves for mamallian cells rather than bacteria. We sought only to provide a few representative examples where the use of ratios led to the masking of important qualitative aspects of data presentation. Additionally, we did not evaluate critically the observations of other work-only the methods of analysis. We would like to assure Dr. Richmond and other authors among our listed references that no criticism of previous results has been implied. Naturally, when suggestions for new methods of analysis are made, it must be the belief of the writers that the new methods are superior to the old-and to suggest that the concept of enhancement and other ratios is problematic is to paint with a very wide brush indeed, considering the history of the multiple ratios used in radiobiology and other fields. We f lt that the interesting data of Richmond and colleagues demonstrated rather well that there were inherent difficulties in the use of ratios of (ER 1) under conditions where the shapes of survival curves changed dramatically; we stand corrected on the imprecise or incomplete discussion of doses and formulations in Richmond's paper. It should also be noted that the vast majority of prior definitions of ERs have used a consistent measure of damage. We agree with this concept, and our only suggestion has been to dispense with the ratio and use of reference conditions. In this context, (ER 1) has a mathematically useful meaning only if ER = 1 represents some stable reference condition (e.g., the aerobic radiation response). As noted in our paper, there is no uniform agreement or consistent use of standard conditions." @default.
