- W2320121921 abstract "An analysis of the ecological distribution in the Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, of five species of Peromyscus (P. maniculatus, P. leucopus, P. boylii, P. truei, and P. difficilis) is presented. Variables considered include elevation, ex- posure, vegetation, and mammalian associates. The five species occur sympatrically, but generalized ecological separations can be seen. Five species of Peromyscus are present in the Sandia Mountains in Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties, New Mexico. An attempt was made to describe the distribution of the five species according to elevation, slope, vegetation, intergeneric and intrageneric relationships. lecting stations ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 ft. elevation. Trap line maxima were one-half mile in length and 200 ft. in elevation. Sympa- try, as used in this paper, denotes the occurrence of two or more spe- cies in a single trap line. Traps were set on all available exposures and an attempt was made to sample all of the major vegetation types. No attempt was made to set equal numbers of traps on all exposures at each locality. However, approximately the same numbers of total trap nights was used on each cardinal exposure. Each station was trapped from one to five nights. Rolled oats were used for bait. All animals were preserved as study skins and skulls, and carcasses were stored in F.A.A. Field data recorded included elevation, exposure, vegetation, and mammalian associates. The plant species nearest to the trap in which any specimen was collected was recorded. The cate- gories rocks and woodpiles were used in place of vegetation if no plant species was found within six ft. of the site of capture. Three hundred and four Peromyscus and approximately 100 speci- mens of various other mammals were collected. The Peromyscus con- sisted of 144 P. boylii, 96 P. maniculatus, 25 P. leucopus, 23 P. truei, and 16 P. difficilis. Identification of specimens was made from the pre- served skins and skulls using comparative material from the Museum of Southwestern Biology. Nomenclature follows Hall and Kelson" @default.
