- W2320173676 abstract "The late Kola Ogutnmola made very large contribution to the development of Yoruba and Nigerian theatre during the 1960's and the preceding decades. One of the best-known of his dramas, The Palmwine Drinkard' or Omu'ti, is so structurally musical as to deserve the name Geoffrey Axworthy has told the history of this work: how, at the suggestion of the School of Drama of University of Ibadan, Amos Tutu'ola, the author of the famous novel of the same name (1952), was commissioned to prepare a sketch for dramatisation of his novel. What he actually produced, says Axworthy, was libretto of Wagnerian proportions, raising technical problems far beyond the means of our university stage. Axworthy and Tutuola together edited this libretto into stageable form, but the project was set aside. In 1962, the revised libretto was given to Ogutnmola to be translated into Yoruba and interpreted in his own way. It will require close study of the relevant manuscripts to reveal just how the honours should be divided between Tutuola, Axworthy and the late Ogutnmola; but be that as it may, the result was Yoruba poetic drama and complete success. I think it very likely that Ogutnmola's translation was poetically free and that the Yoruba text should be regarded as his own. It is very lively, full of imagery; and it is good, solid Yoruba. The language questions that have plagued the discussions of Tutuola's work simply do not arise with the opera. Ogutnmola's Yoruba is vigorous, imaginative, standard Yoruba. I would call it elegant if that did not go beyond what I am really capable of judging. I certainly found it fun to work with. It should be made clear that the English translation which we have published derives entirely from the sung Yoruba text and owes nothing to any other document, except for the stage directions, both English and Yoruba, which are mostly taken from the acting script. It should also be understood that our Yoruba text derives entirely from the recording of the second public performance in 1963, which we have now published, except for three lines on page 38, and the three lines at the bottom of page 50 of our edition, where we have pieced out gaps from the acting script." @default.
