- W2320194306 abstract "Exchange and virtualization of a high performance and high availability network The Columbus Ground segment includes a MPLS backbone as a high performance network between Space Control Centers, USOCs (User Support and Operations Center) and EAC/ESC (European Astronaut Center/Engineer Support Center). The IGS-R (Interconnected Ground Subnetwork Replacement) became necessary because parts of the old hardware became out of support (Cisco End of Life announcements for switches and firewalls) in 2013 and therefore the high SLAs could no longer be guaranteed. Another goal of the redesign was to reduce the running costs of the network. To achieve the high requirements and to reuse parts of the old configuration suitable Cisco products were chosen. The IGS network consists of three logical areas. The “Operations” network is used for real-time services like TM/TC and VoiP, “Operations Support” is needed for non-real-time services like HTTP, Video or Dropbox (FTP) and “Highrate” is used for high bitrate for science data and video. The nodes are either connected in a redundant setup for the main sites (e.g. NASA Houston, ROSCOSMOS Moscow, COL-CC) or in a minimal non-redundant setup (USOCs, EAC/ESC). The network operates 24/7 and it is very difficult to make changes without affecting operations. Based on the high availability demands the IGS-R project had to be planned, designed and tested with regards to the high-level requirements of Human Spaceflight. Before the migration each of the three network areas of the IGS used its dedicated routers, switches and firewalls. To reduce the overall number of devices the design goal was to merge all three areas using the same physical device, but still be logically separated networks due to security and QoS requirements. This was accomplished by using VRF (Virtual Routing and Forwarding) instances on the routers, multiple contexts on the firewalls and trunk Ports with VLANs in between the network devices. Hence it was possible to implement a form of virtualization on the IGS network. The new design was tested in a separate test environment with the actual COL-CC network setup. To emulate the behavior of a Wide Area Network the software WANem was used. Measurements of high performance and availability tests were performed to achieve the high requirements of Human Spaceflight. After intensive testing the hardware was ordered and at the beginning of 2013 the first nodes were migrated to the new design. The Planning of the on-site work was a very complex task, because during the replacement on-going operations had to be considered and possible outages prevented. This made the scheduling a challenging task. Therefore excellent planning was mandatory. To accomplish this ambitious project all Columbus team members had to work together to finish the project in the first quarter of 2014." @default.
