- W2320996874 abstract "From May to October 1851, nearly one quarter of the entire British population gathered inside the iron and glass halls of London’s Crystal Palace to see what would become known as the Great Exhibition. Organized by Prince Albert and Henry Cole, the Exhibition featured the latest in technological and industrial inventions and proved to be a significant event for Britain’s burgeoning economy in the global market. Yet in his innovative treatment of this event, Geoffrey Cantor sidesteps scientific and political inquiries—well trodden by recent scholarship—and instead approaches the Exhibition on a road less travelled, a religious one. That religion played more than a peripheral role in mid-nineteenth-century Britain is certain, and Cantor gently challenges anachronistic reconstructions of the Exhibition that perceive human progress as pervasively if not exclusively secular. In seeking to reassess ‘the historical significance of the Great Exhibition by interpreting it as a religious event or, more precisely, an event possessing many diverse religious dimensions’, Cantor begins his book by offering a survey of the religious landscape in 1851. The usual contrast between established and dissenting churches is helpful here, though Cantor is right to highlight their common evangelical identity as summarized by David Bebbington’s widely recognized paradigm: biblicism, crucicentrism, conversionism, and activism. The following questions are then raised. What responses did the Exhibition evoke from the seven and a quarter million Sunday attendants registered in the religious census? In what ways did these responses differ among Jews, Catholics, Anglicans, and dissenting groups? Moreover, how did London’s ecclesial structures cope with the 60,000–100,000 foreigners who descended upon the city?" @default.
