- W2321215833 abstract "Background and aim In blood vessels, nitric oxide (NO) generated by the NO synthase on endothelial cells suppresses the aggregation and activation of platelets. Therefore, biocompatibility of dialysis membrane may be improved with the use of dialysate containing NO which delivers NO to the membrane surface. The aim of the present study was to examine whether dialysate containing NO can suppress platelet activation and can maintain methemoglobin concentration in the blood at a sufficiently low level during dialysis. Methods Dialysis experiments were carried out using porcine whole blood or platelet rich plasma (PRP). NO was added using gas exchange membranes placed just before dialysate inlet of polysulfone dialyzer (TS-1.6UL, Toray Medical, Tokyo, Japan). Platelet activation was evaluated by p-selectin expression on the platelets’ surface in PRP sample. Methemoglobin and nitrite/nitrate concentration in blood samples during 4 h of dialysis were measured. Results P-selectin expression without the addition of NO significantly increased (P Conclusions NO added to the dialysate was capable of suppressing platelet activation, without an increase in methemoglobin level." @default.
