- W2321785367 abstract "Giving a Comparative Dimension to American History: Problems and Opportunities As one who has written and advocated comparative in the hope of broadening the horizons of American historians, I am sympathetic to the tenor of Grew's approach. Although I am tempted to take issue with his skeptical attitude toward the special claims of the type of comparative that I try to practice-what might be called bilateral comparison in depth-to do so would be beside the point.1 Sustained comparison that cuts across the conventional frontiers of specialization seems no less rare among those who depart from American than among scholars based in other fields. The remark of mine that Grew quotes about the sparseness of this kind of comparative work was meant to apply to American historians regardless of field, rather than merely to those specializing in the of the United States. It also applies fairly well to the historical professions of other Western countries, which are fragmented into fields defined principally in terms of emerging or established nation-states. In some European universities there is a separate field known as and economic history which is theoretically free from the fixation on nation-states and political boundaries. In practice, however, most of these social and economic historians concentrate on a single country, usually their own (although some of them generalize freely about the rest of the world on the basis of their local examples). The main obstacle to sustained cross-cultural comparison is the premium that historians place on the extensive use of primary" @default.
