- W2321799097 abstract "The individual, corporate, institutional, and national violence, persecution, and genocide committed in the name of religious faith leaves no doubt of the need for members of different religious faiths to learn to live together in mutual understanding-not merely a desideratum, this is an imperative for our age. Against all modern attempts to approach the with respect and dignity, the closure of bounded-blinded-allegiance to selfproclaimed identities and isms continues to devastate our world. The pages of this journal bear witness to the fruits of open and tolerant study of differing religious traditions, and it is to be hoped that such mutual investigations will flourish in other areas of the world as well. Sometimes, however, the boundaries that separate are more easily understood and traversed the closer they are to home, so, in the belief that the approach to great chasms of religious culture can perhaps be aided by understanding how religious traditions have dealt with differing interpretations within their own teachings, this essay explores one small aspect of the Buddhist approach to Buddhist diversity. It is often claimed that Buddhism approaches other belief systems and doctrinal traditions with tolerance and acceptance, seeing them as differing expressions of truth that are valid because they speak to the many different needs of different people.1 These differing truths can readily be accommodated because ultimately there is but one truth (ekayana) to which all paths lead. The Lotus Sutra and its doctrine of skillful means are usually taken as the locus classicus of this philosophy of accommodation, doctrinally rooted both in a pragmatic or utilitarian strategy that grants doctrine validity only in terms of its efficacy in directing one toward the goal and in the unitary nature of that goal, a direct experience of things in themselves, beyond all bifurcations of subject and object, beyond conceptualization, and, hence, beyond all language and independent of all doctrine. The latter notion-that truth is linguistically transcendent-is seen to be internally consistent as well, in that Buddhism ultimately rejects even its own teach-" @default.
