- W2321800514 abstract "Crime, Critique and Utopia is a welcome addition to the recent renaissance of anarchistic, abolitionist, imaginative and Utopian perspectives in criminology. It comprises ten essays, nine of which are published here for the first time while the tenth is taken from Loïc Wacquant’s Punishing the Poor(2009). According to its cover blurb, the book ‘examines the relationship between Utopia and the political through an analysis of utopian principles in relation to a range of issues’ such as the ‘quest for a transformative criminology’ and a ‘critical analysis of criminal law and state policy on crime’—a brave agenda and rather a wide one to be attempted in ten relatively short chapters. Nonetheless, there is plenty here that is thought-provoking, useful and timely. The two most outstanding chapters for me were those written by David Scott (Chapter 6) and Sarah Armstrong (Chapter 8). In Chapter 6, Scott makes an intrepid and radical attempt to identify and address the contradictions between utopianism and realism—and then discusses practices and strategies which might constitute ‘competing contradictions’ to the status quo. This chapter is pre-eminently suitable for students studying abolitionist perspectives; it is well structured and clearly written. Refreshing and original, also, it suggests and confronts the impossible possibilities of utopian and abolitionist perspectives in the here and now of political struggle rather than in the ‘Nowhere’ of More’s Utopia (2008 [1516; 1901])." @default.
