The hydroelectric power comes from the potential energy of dammed river water which is used to drive a water turbine and electric generator. Any water leak in the dam system will affect the head and thus potential energy and the production of electrical power. A case of leaking dam is investigated by the application of the reflection seismic through the dam gallery. The principal reason for such unusual methodology was that the standard electrical method based on the streaming potential fail to detect the location of the leaks. As part of the investigation, a pilot survey was initially conducted to investigate the seismic response. Several shots using sledge hammer were recorded into 24 geophones spaced at 2 m, inside the dam. After encouraging results about 500 m of 2D slalom line was recorded through two connecting galleries from one to the other side of the dam. Data was processed, migrated and converted to depth using 2 velocity functions derived from VSP surveys. Several zones of potential rock cavitation were identified based on the expectation that an increases signal scattering will cause degradation of seismic signal. Projected boreholes indeed struck several large cavities. This discovery made with simple approach was followed by cement injection and further water losses were mitigated.
