- W2321809461 abstract "It is widely assumed that bridge scour is to be avoided and that the installation of scour countermeasures such as riprap installed level with the stream bed is advisable. That assumption is challenged here with a view towards allowing an acceptably-deep scour hole to form for the benefit of fish populations while reducing the need for riprap. Enhancement of fish habitat may also be beneficial to fishery-based tourism, recreation, and industry. For many species of fish, pool habitat that can result from scour has been shown to be a desirable and possibly limited feature of the environment, providing habitat and refuge from aerial predators and fast currents. Approaches to infrastructural development that optimize benefits to both fisheries and bridge construction should be reexamined by bridge engineers and stream restoration professionals. One possibility is to place riprap after scour at bridge piers and abutments is allowed to an acceptable depth that will not threaten the foundation." @default.
