- W2321820597 abstract "Studies of the interplay between mathematics and religions have increased in recent years. While such relations decreased after around 1750, they remained relatively strong in Britain. Thus it is appropriate that their manifestations in the Victorian era be studied. But chapter two of Daniel J. Cohen's book interrupts the Victorian narrative, for it treats the Harvard professor Benjamin Peirce (1809–1880), who fits by chronology but not at all by geography. The main strength of the book comes from Cohen's archival research, which provided him with several good sources of information. But otherwise much is at sea. Two issues must suffice here. First, Cohen emphasizes the place of pure mathematics, but his initial example is the discovery of Neptune (pp. 1–5), a classic example of applied mathematics. His failure to discuss applied mathematics is especially odd, for not only was it the strongest sector of Victorian mathematics but sometimes it also involved factors of religious concern, such as the (pantheistic?) aether. The author correctly notes G. G. Stokes, who gave the Gifford lectures (a religious series) in the early 1890s on “natural theology” and yet left out mathematics almost completely (p. 168). This peculiar abstention is evident in contemporary Victorian Christian applied mathematicians, and is worthy of more attention." @default.
