- W2321820824 abstract "F rank Jewett Mather’s story ‘The Missing Saint Michael’ (1912) recounts the dilemma of an American woman, Emma Verplanck, living in the hills near Florence. When her compatriot and neighbour Morton Crocker proposes marriage, does he want her for herself alone, or rather to acquire her painting of St Michael? The sumptuous gold-ground panel depicts the Archangel, clad in flamboyant armour, casting the devil from Heaven in a dramatic episode drawn from the Book of Revelation. It was a subject that had captured the medieval imagination time and time again; for later collectors the warrior saint evoked dreams of chivalry. Verplanck’s panel (whose real-life inspiration is now in the National Gallery in London) comes from a fictional polyptych by real-life artist Carlo Crivelli, an Italian painter poised at the cusp of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. By the end of the nineteenth century his works were coveted by wealthy Americans who, only recently enamoured of early Italian paintings, set out upon what Henry James called ‘the golden quest’." @default.
