- W2321824700 abstract "During the 20th century, the economy of Trinidad has changed from an agricultural to an industrial one, with accompanying urbanization. Drainage of swampland, human encroachment into both marshland and foothills, the development of cattle ranches and the neglect of traditional cocoa and citrus estates have brought about significant ecological change. Human population increase has led to both pollution and some over-exploitation of wild areas through tourism. In this century the Horned Screamer and the Blue-and-yellow Macaw have been extirpated from Trinidad, populations of six seed-eating species, mostly Oryzoborus and Sporophila spp., have been decimated by trappers, and the Scarlet Ibis, first encouraged to breed by the establishment of a sanctuary, has recently ceased to do so, possibly because of mismanagement of the sanctuary. Species showing range expansions include Cattle Egret, Southern Lapwing, Yellow-headed Caracara, Whitetailed and Pearl Kites, Olivaceous Cormorant, Tropical Mockingbird, and Azure Gallinule. The wintering Dickcissel is present some years in enormous numbers, but entirely absent other years.
