- W2321860049 abstract "The vegetation of a specific area on the Pine Ridge escarpment in northwestern Nebraska was analyzed by use of transects and the point frame method. The area was characterized by the presence of Pinus ponderosa Doug. and inter- spersed areas of mixed prairie and has been relatively ungrazed for the past 22 years. Based on relative density, the dominant woody species were Prunus virginiana L. var. melanocarpa (A. Nels.) Sarg. and Pinus ponderosa. Pinus ponderosa had the greatest relative basal area. The principal grasses, based on relative foliage cover, were Andropogon scoparius Michx. and Poa pratensis L. Other codominants were Carex filifolia Nutt. and Yucca glauca Nutt. The area is unique because it contains boreal representatives and species characteristic of the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, and the southeastern and southwestern United States. INTRODUCTION. In Northwest Nebraska, the Pine Ridge escarp- ment extends about 65 miles in an easterly and then northeasterly direction from the Wyoming border to the South Dakota border. It is contiguous to the south with the High Plains and to the north with the Missouri Plateau (Weaver and Albertson, 1956). Parts of the Missouri Plateau are deeply eroded resulting in the so-called bad- land areas of northwestern Nebraska. The escarpment is character- ized vegetatively by the presence of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Doug.) and other flora of the Rocky Mountain area. Interspersed among the pine, especially on ridges and southfacing slopes are rep- resentatives of the mixed-grass prairie. In 1947 Tolstead presented a general survey of the vegetation of the Pine Ridge but since that time little work has been done in this area. The present study describes the vegetation of a specific area within the Pine Ridge located in Sheridan County about 13 miles north of Hay Springs, Nebraska. The study site was within a state special-use area set aside for hunting purposes by the Game, Forestation and Parks Commission and therefore has not been grazed by cattle to any extent since 1942. It is at elevations of about 3300 to 3500 feet. This special-use area includes some 1300 acres; however, only 22.2 acres located in the southeast corner were used as the study area. Topo- graphically the study community was represented by a series of east-" @default.
