- W2321865835 abstract "Wall conditions in a Stationary Plasma Thruster with a broad ionization region are considered to play a much more important role than in a Thruster with Anode Layer. This may explain our successful simulations of mini-TAL with a fully kinetic code, while attempts at simulating the SPT-like P-5 have faced substantial difficulties. Detailed analysis shows that in PIC-MCC simulations with artificial plasma permittivity and limited numbers of particles, both the sheath structure and the ion wall fluxes are poorly reproduced. Typical runs take several days of computer time on a single-processor computer, making impossible any further increase of the number of particles in the simulation. We try to overcome these difficulties by a) imposing theoretical values of sheath potential and plasma fluxes through it, and b) speeding-up the kinetic code by parallelization using MPI techniques, and running the code on a massively parallel platform. We apply these new techniques to investigate the role of the secondary electron emission on the conditions of the SPT discharge. In a separate study we make a semi-self-consistent simulation of the wall erosion due to energetic ion impact. Our ultimate goal is to study SPT performance at high voltages and mitigate the dielectric wall degradation problem." @default.
