- W2321880904 abstract "Structural noise is a common problem in ultrasonic non destructive evaluation NDE. The basic wavelet de-noising consists of a thresholding of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) coefficients. Nevertheless, DWT is not translation invariant and some improvements over this basic non-linear scheme can be obtained by the use of undecimated wavelet transforms (UWT). In this work, we present new advances in the study of the performance of redundant wavelet schemes for grain noise reduction in ultrasonic NDE. The different de-noising schemes are applied to both synthetic and experimental ultrasonic signals. Decomposition level dependent thresholds, appropriate for correlated noise, are used, and the values obtained from the different UWT and DWT processors for Universal, SURE and Minimax threshold selection rules are analysed. A statistical analysis is presented, comparing the performances of an a trous based UWT processor and a classical DWT processor in terms of the mean value and the standard deviation of the signal-to-noise ratio of several sets of synthetic ultrasonic traces." @default.
