- W232188700 abstract "Predictions about energy transfer events in biological preparations are usually made by extrapolating the patterns of ionization in gaseous systems. This technique seems inadequate to account for spectra of events in condensed systems. Therefore, a comparison of the emissions from powders of the aromatic amino acids and enzymes trypsin and ribonuclease resulting from x ray and ultraviolet light excitation is made. Experimental procedures are described, and the results are examined. Eventual appearance in the lowest excited level of some of the compounds of not less than 0.03 and 0.2 or more of the x ray energy absorbed is indicated. Ratios of fluorescence to phosphorescence are an order of magnitude greater during ultraviolet irradiation than during x irradiation. Emission and phosphorescence spectra, decay times, and intensities are displayed; and possible mechanisms for the phenomena observed are treated. 43 references. (D.C.W.)" @default.
