- W2321888768 abstract "Studies using 14C-labeled pesticides applied to soils have shown that for many of these substances, most of the applied radioactivity is bound irreversibly to the humin fraction of soil organic matter. The intractable nature of humin has made it difficult to investigate the nature of these bound residues. Bound-pesticide residues were prepared by incubating soils with 14C-labeled atrazine (ring- or ethyl-labeled), 2,4-D (ring- or carboxyl-labeled), or DDT (ring-labeled). Humin was isolated by a traditional alkaline-extraction procedure and then fractionated into its bound-humic acid, bound lipid, and mineral components using the methyl-isobutylketone (MIBK) partitioning technique. A mass balance of radioactive residues bound to the components of humin was constructed using liquid scintillation counting. For all incubation experiments, the greatest amount of radioactivity was found in the bound-humic acid component of humin. The atrazine mass balance revealed that a significant amount of the radioactivity was associated with the mineral component of humin regardless of where the pesticide had been labeled. This was attributed to the small amount of organic matter that cannot be removed from the mineral fraction by the MIBK method. This organic matter has a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum different from any other humic fraction present. Approximately 75% of the radioactivity for the ring-labeled 2,4-D was associated with the bound humic acid, whereas the mass balance constructed for the carboxyl-labeled pesticide showed two-thirds of the radioactivity in the bound lipid fraction. The DDT mass balance shows that approximately two-thirds of the radioactivity is associated with the bound-lipid fraction." @default.
