- W2322150085 abstract "In this paper we question how managerialism, as a central organizing principle of neo-liberal capitalism, is adopted and resisted in non-profit organizations (NPOs) in South Africa and the impact this has on identity construction. Increasingly NPOs are adopting ideas and practices emanating from the corporate world. However, little attention has been devoted to issues of identity resulting from the adoption of business-like tools and techniques in NPOs. This paper aims to contribute to this debate by adopting a critical cross-cultural perspective on how these organizations creatively construct their organizational identity by mimicking and contesting the managerialist discourse emanating from the global governance structure of international aid. Thirty five semi-structured interviews were conducted with managers and team leaders from fifteen NPOs. Using an interpretive framework, this study analyzed how the managerialist discourse is mimicked, translated and contested through the local cultural lens of Ubuntu. The data suggest that, on the one hand, isomorphic pressures operate as a device of sense-giving, through which the NPOs derive a sense of identity by internalizing the managerialist discourse and the ‘best practices’ that go with it in order to obtain legitimacy as ‘proper’ organizations. On the other hand, they also wish to emphasize the distinctiveness of NPOs and the ways in which these organizations are managed. Here Ubuntu provides a device of sense-making through which the managerialist discourse is translated and contested. This gives rise to a hybrid identity that aims to reconcile isomorphic pressures to become more business-like with local cultural value orientations." @default.
