- W2322262969 abstract "Published accounts which refer specifically to the ecology of seashore bryophytes are mainly confined to local floras (e.g. Gillham 1954; Dalby 1966; Bates 1973; Gilbert, Holligan & Holligan 1973). Relatively few bryophytes on the basis of field observation have been described as halophytes. A comparative study of the cation relations of selected seashore and inland species (Bates & Brown 1974) indicated that salt tolerance in the seashore mosses Grimmia maritima,t Ulota phyllantha and Tortella flavovirens may be primarily due to their ability to maintain the relative impermeability of their cells when confronted with the high external Na: Ca ratios found in seawater. There are few published studies dealing with the quantitative description and multivariate analysis of bryophyte and lichen vegetation (Foote 1966; Bunce 1967; Yarranton 1967 a, b, c, d) although there are a larger number of accounts of epiphytic vegetation in which these techniques have been profitably employed (see Jesberger & Sheard 1973 for references). The work reported here is a quantitative investigation of the saxicolous bryophyte vegetation in an area subjected to a gradient of maritime conditions. Macrolichens and a few crustose lichens have been included in the present study because they form a conspicuous part of the vegetation and may be important competitors with the bryophytes in rocky habitats." @default.
