- W2322388514 abstract "Why does psychology examine religiousness? Beizen (2004) expresses in detail his worries concerning the possible unknown distorting affects of the psychological approaches to examining religious topics. He mentions over stepping boundaries in the psychology profession in this area, which stems from a lack of training in moral and religious topics and schematic knowledge. Thus, he warns us of the potential for unintentional dilettantism. Furthermore, effective consequence in thera peutic work as well, according to Beizen, is the lack of emphatic attention towards religious clients. The other significant point of view in his writings (amongst others) is the incorrect interpretation of the relationship between mental health and reli giousness/spirituality, for religiousness and spirituality are not about health, rather they serve another goal/role. Therefore, it cannot be used as a tool for maintaining or improving mental health because this would result in it becoming meaningless. In our opinion, contrary to Beizen, it is not the role of psychology to pass judgement, pick sides, claim professional understanding or interfere with the life of an individual concerning their religiousness, spirituality or inner questions. However, psychology does examine and understand all phenomena that are relevant to understanding human feelings and behavior. Religious ness is also a human activity that succeeds in the same psychological pro cesses as any other human activity, as Jones (2004) so well puts it. Consequently, any expression of religiousness could constitute the goal of psychological research in general. However, examinations along the psychic function approach and those searching for the correlations between manifes tations religiousness and psychic operation simplify, however, not uninten tionally. That is to say, due to a lack in properly differentiated knowledge, in the case of a new subject the typical method of scientific (including psycho logical) understanding is descriptive data collection via the exact defining of partial information. It is the explicit goal of these examinations that this topic be gradually included in the knowledge base of the given branches of science" @default.
