- W2322420289 abstract "Platymantis is a large genus that includes about 40 species in the South Pacific from the Philippines to Fiji (Brown, 1985; Duellman, 1993). Because the genus shows extensive morphological and ecological divergence, and because each species in the genus has a restricted range, Platymantis is a fertile area for study of speciation. The Palau frog, Platymantis pelewensis, is endemic to the Palau (Belau) Islands and is the only frog native to Micronesia. It has an isolated range, and its phylogenetic relationships to congeners occurring in adjacent areas are obscure. Inger (1954) suggested that P pelewensis is closely related to P papuensis of New Guinea and P dorsalis of the Philippines. Gorham (1965) claimed that P pelewensis is more closely related to P dorsalis than to P papuensis. In this study, I compared external morphology and morphometric features of the three species. Previously, I described karyotypes of P papuensis and P dorsalis (Kuramoto, 1985), and Ota and Matsui (1995) reported the karyotype of P pelewensis from Koror. I also examined karyotypes of P pelewensis from other islands. Call structures are diagnostic features of species and often useful for elucidating species relationships (Kuramoto, 1986). Acoustic features of P pelewensis thus were compared with those of P papuensis and P dorsalis. Zweifel (1969) and Menzies (1982) previously had described acoustic features of P papuensis." @default.
