- W2322480608 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Postoperative infection after cesarean delivery increases maternal morbidity and medical costs. The objective of this study is to explore modifiable risk factors for surgical site infection after cesarean delivery. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent a cesarean delivery between January 1, 2013, and June 31, 2013, at an academic institution. A postoperative infection was defined by any infection within 30 days from date of surgery. χ2 was used for comparison of all categorical data. Student's t test was used for continuous variables. Univariate analysis was done with significance determined at P<.05 and subsequent variables then run through a multivariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1,189 women were included in our final analysis. The occurrence of all postoperative infections after cesarean delivery was 7.6% (n=91) with 5.0% of these infections meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria for surgical site infection (n=59). Women with increasing body mass indexes (calculated as weight (kg)/[height (m)]2) (P=.004) had higher incidence of postoperative infections as did those with pregnancy complicated by asthma (P=.004), sexually transmitted infection (P=.002), and gestational hypertension (P=.02). Our study demonstrated an increased rate of infection in patients with estimated blood loss greater than 1,000 mL (P=.02) as well as those with a postoperative course complicated by longer hospital stay (6.37 compared with 4.89 days; P=.02) and blood transfusion (P=.002). Intravenous iron therapy was not associated with increased risk of infection (P=.11). CONCLUSION: Our study identifies several important modifiable risk factors and comorbidities for postoperative infection after cesarean delivery. Identification of these risk factors will allow the health care provider to determine targeted preventive measures for reduction of infection after cesarean delivery." @default.
