- W2322557498 abstract "THE forest is the beginning and the end of economic life in Finland. But before Finland began to live off timber with the late nineteenth century transformation of softwood values-it had to live off the land. Moreover, when it ceases to live off timber for example, when war obstructs its vital channels of tradeit must continue to live off the land. If few countries are so aware of the importance of their timber, few are so conscious of the significance of their farmland. In view of its high latitude it is remarkable that Finland devotes so much energy to farming and derives such a significant part of its national income from it. Farming is everywhere set within the frame of the forest, and forestry is almost everywhere integrated with farming practice. Farm land has been won historically and is reclaimed contemporarily from the woodland. The revaluation of timber and re-assessment of agriculture have encouraged a new approach to rural resources. Forestry and farming-always complementary--now become increasingly competitive. And the competition results from the growing intensification of activity in each pursuit. An economic geographer observing this intensification is likely to see it. in terms of maps. It is appropriate that the forest as the beginning of economic life in Finland should be the subject of the first significant resource map of Finland. This was the forest map of the land survey director C. W. Gylden, published just over a century ago. It is reproduced as Figure 1 and shows his qualitative assessment of Finland's forests. Two main areas of softwood exhaustion stand out--the northwestern coastlands (Ostrobothnia), the pitch and tar region; and the southeastern territory of Karelia, where woodland burning for farming purposes was most widespread. The agricultural resources of Finland assessed experimentally in the unpublished statistics of C. C. B6cker in the 1830's were not expressed cartographically until I. J. Inberg's Suomenmaa kartasto (Helsinki, 1878). Since then, an appreciable tradition of map making has run side by side with the publication of agricultural censuses. Both the first and second Atlases of Finland (1899, 1910) gave generous space to agricultural maps. Hannes Gebhard, the great protagonist of farm co-operation, in addition to sponsoring the first significantly reliable rural census also championed maps through rural reports such as his Socialstatistik A tlas. It is a far cry from these earlier assessments to the great national stock takings which have been conducted in Finland at the turn of this half century. The 1951 agricultural census (Helsinki, 1954) has not merely followed in the footsteps" @default.
