- W2322652469 abstract "When the first seventy chapters of Musil's Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften came out in translation, considerable criticism was leveled against the translators for having mutilated the novel. On the basis of the English translation alone, it is indeed hard to see what the work stands for or why it stands for anything,' remaiked one of the reviewers. To the friends of Musil, who had eagerly awaited the English edition of his monumental novel, such criticism was hard to bear. Fortunately it does not hold true any more. The complete first volume has now been translated, and though this leaves the second and third volume still to be done, we have a sufficiently large slice of the work to give us an idea of the various strains that have gone into the making of the novel, thus enabling us to recognize the main theme. Musil is difficult reading. It is perhaps because of this that the full import and appreciation of his art has been so slow in coming. We must, therefore, understand at the outset that Musil's work is not a novel in the sense of a long, unbroken narrative, but consists of a tremendous number of seemingly disjointed chapters (some 250 in the three volumes of the original). Each of these chapters is almost self-contained and only added loosely to the precreding one, and thus each chapter is in form very much like an essay. Yet each chapter does somehow contain the essence of the novel, not only because of its style, which is characteristically Musil, but also in relation to the theme or themes. That is not to say that each chapter includes an equal amount of essence. There are some chapters in which the theme appears in bold relief, while others seem to be diverting and digressive. Yet an examination of one key chapter throws light on the meaning of" @default.
