- W2322813313 abstract "Lane (1962, pp. 66-67) mentions that sea stars (Asteroidea) and brittle-stars (Ophiuroidea) may be dangerous to octopi, citing field observations by Schmitt and Voss. In Alaskan waters, Schmitt saw an octopus (species not mentioned) that had been slithering across a ship's deck immobilized by having several starfish (species not mentioned) thrown on it. The octopus became limp, and could then be handled as easily as if it were dead. Voss placed a small common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) into a jar containing the brittle-star, Ophiocoma echinata. The mollusk was convulsed, stiffened, and died. The aim of this paper was simply to ascertain by observations and experiments in the field whether or not octopi are immobilized/killed by contact with sea stars or brittle-stars as Voss and Schmitt imply they are. Ricketts and Calvin (1962) was used to determine the identity of species used." @default.
