- W2322856471 abstract "ANYONE WHO DOUBTS the role of contingency in history need look no further than the historical training of Oscar Handlin. When he arrived at Harvard in 1934 to begin the doctoral program, at age eighteen, he intended to become a medievalist. “I came to do medieval history and [Harvard] was the place to do it,” he recalled years later. But Handlin was far from typical. To him, “whom you worked with” was much more important than what you studied. So Handlin chose, of all things, an Americanist, Arthur Schlesinger Sr., as his new advisor. Haskins’s sudden departure from Harvard changed the course of Handlin’s life and American historiography, making it possible for Handlin to become one of the pioneering figures in American immigration history, and there is no work of his that is more pioneering than his first book, Boston’s Immigrants. It is hard to imagine that Handlin’s own childhood in an immigrant household did not influence his choice of topic for his first book or his approach to it. Handlin was born in Brooklyn on September 29, 1915, the first child of Russian Jewish immigrants, Joseph and Ida, who had arrived in the United States just a few years earlier (his mother in 1903 and his father 1913). Young Oscar grew up in a home where English was not the first language and where the dislocations caused by the immigration experience would have been everywhere apparent. Before her marriage, Handlin’s mother had" @default.
