- W2323165641 abstract "Before Paul Avrich, the preeminent historian of anarchism, died in 2006 he asked his daughter Karen Avrich to complete the manuscript on which he was working. The result is Sasha and Emma, a book that recaptures two lives that, as Emma Goldman herself remarked, were “so interwoven it is impossible to separate one from the other” (p. 395). From their first meeting in 1889 until Alexander “Sasha” Berkman's death in 1936 their fierce attachment to one another transcended their differences in temperament and character, long periods of separation, and their occasional, sometimes-bitter disagreements about anarchist activities. By now, Goldman's story is familiar. Since her rediscovery by feminists in the late 1960s and early 1970s, her writings have been republished and anthologized, and she has been the subject of a multivolume scholarly edition, plays, over one dozen biographies and studies of aspects of her life and ideas, and she was even profiled in a documentary for the pbs series American Experience. Posterity has been less kind to Berkman. A measure of their relative renown is their respective resting places: Goldman's in Chicago's Waldheim Cemetery, close to the Haymarket Square martyrs who inspired her, and Berkman's, only a temporary grave site in Nice—a concession à perpétuité at the depths of the depression. The reasons for the difference are not hard to fathom. Of his thirty years in the United States Berkman was imprisoned for sixteen, and after release from prison for his attempt on the life of the industrialist Henry Clay Frick during the 1892 Homestead Steel strike it took him years to recover his equilibrium. (Writing Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist [1912] proved cathartic in that process.) Berkman's energies were absorbed almost exclusively by the anarchist and labor movements. By contrast, Goldman undertook annual cross-country speaking tours, cultivated liberals who were sympathetic to the causes she championed (if not to anarchism), and relished her role as a public figure." @default.
