- W2323211730 abstract "Formation flight is one operational efficiency concept which could provide significant fuel burn and economic benefits to the air transportation system. However, substantial rolling moment of the trailing aircraft and possible non-optimum flight condition due to different fuel consumption rate of formation leading and trailing aircraft are two important problems which need to be solved when introducing formation flight to real-world operations. In order to handle these two issues, this paper investigates the application of variable camber technique to formation flight. In particular, a class function/shape function methodology will be utilized to describe and create a variable camber flap. This conformal variable camber is used for formation trailing aircraft lateral trimming and aerodynamic polar adjustment in formation flight mission. The case study results showed that optimized variable camber trimming can improve the cruise aerodynamics and overall aircraft performance, i.e. variable camber brings an improvement in induced drag savings of 1.5 2.5% and in block fuel savings of 0.64%." @default.
