- W2323313349 abstract "Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder affecting 47% of cardiac surgery patients. This complication can result in serious consequences such as falls, pulmonary infections, decubitus ulcers and self-extubation. In addition, functional and cognitive decline may be present in over one third of patients after an episode of delirium. These complications affect family caregivers: three-quarters report feelings of severe anxiety during an episode, and helplessness in relation to their ability to provide support to the delirious patient. In response to this increasingly problematic situation, an intervention tool to reduce feelings of helplessness and anxiety in family caregivers of cardiac surgery patients will be presented. As part of a Master's degree project, this tool was developed from a comprehensive literature review combined with suggestions from family caregivers of patients who had a prior delirium episode. Families of delirious patients were interviewed to enhance our understanding of their needs during the delirium episode as well as the support they desired from the nursing staff, such as facilitating the participation of family caregivers in certain care activities and offering factual information about delirium. This tool has been validated by different experts in the field of family intervention and in cardiac surgery delirium.Family caregivers are important allies in the prevention, detection, and management of delirium. This tool is expected to guide nurses' interventions aimed at offering adequate support to family caregivers of delirious cardiac surgery patients.
