- W2323372941 abstract "An analytical study was performed to quantify new lubricant technologies needed to meet the goals of the Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET) initiative. The study quantified thermal and performance property requirements for IHPTET Phase ll and Phase 111 engine lubricants, as well as weight and performance benefits realized if lubricants with the required properties are developed. The study showed that significant weight saving sare possiblefor IHPTETengines if lubricantsmeeting the required properties are developed. Without high temperature lubricants, performance impacts would include mission envelope restrictions such as reduced range, speed, payload, and time. Parametric analyses showed that lubricant bulk oxidative stability. autoignitiontemperature, and densitycontributed the most totheoreticalweight savings forlHPTETengines. Lubricant volalilityand hot spotstability werealsoshownto becritical properties that must be improved in advanced lubricants. A program has been initiated to develop the basestockand additive technology needed to enhance the temperature capabilities of lubricants qualified under the U.S. Air force MIL-L-87100 lubricant specification. The goal of this program is to develop a lubricant with a 330°C (626°F) bulk oil temperature capability for IHPTETPhase iI engines. Development goals for critical lubricant properties are discussed, as well as their impact on design and performance of advanced engine lubrication systems." @default.
