- W2323805565 abstract "Deposition of 11 eggs by a female Sceloporus rufidorsum and associated behavior of the lizard are described, and interpreted by the authors as an example of behavior in lizards. Trans. Kansas Acad. Sci., vol. 82:1, 1979. It is commonly noted that reptiles, and squamates in particular, display little or no parental behavior (Orr, 1976; Wilson, 1975). Even a cursory search of the herpetological literature suggests, however, that this is not the case. Female lizards, for example, are known to display (1) nest-building or digging (e.g., Blair, 1960; Deraniyagala, 1958; Fitch, 1970; Rand, 1968), (2) egg-burying (e.g., Blair, 1960; Gordon, 1960; Evans, 1959; Noble and Mason, 1933; Rand, 1968), (3) incubation, brooding and/or defense of eggs (e.g., Asana, 1941; Cagle, 1940; Evans, 1959; Fitch, 1954; Greene and Dial, 1966; Noble and Mason, 1933; Taylor, 1956; Telford, 1959), and (4) brooding, care and feeding, and defense of newly-hatched young (e.g., Cowles, 1944; Evans, 1959). It seems reasonable to consider such behavior as exemplifying lizard maternal behavior. The present report describes an observation of egg-burying in the Mexican desert spiny lizard, Sceloporus rufidorsum (Hall, In preparation), formerly S. magister rufidorsum (see Smith, 1939). On August 18, 1978, 4 h after photophase onset (on a photoperiod consisting of a 14-h photophase and 10h scotophase), a captive adult female (of an adult male and female pair presented as a gift to the authors by Dr. W. P. Hall) was observed ovipositing a clutch of eggs. The lizards were housed in an 80-gallon aquarium which contained a 6-in deep layer of sand throughout, several large rocks, and water and food dishes. This female's snout-vent length was 9.53 cm and vent-tail length was 11.43 cm. Eleven eggs were laid in approximately 18 min. Six possessed an embryo. During oviposition the female was perched on a small stone in a terrarium at 36?C during photophase (ambient temperature was 24?C during scotophase). In this position on the stone, the This content downloaded from 207.46.13.115 on Sat, 08 Oct 2016 04:25:07 UTC All use subject to http://about.jstor.org/terms" @default.
