- W2323848061 abstract "Ventriculoperitoneal shunting remains the most common operation for hydrocephalus. Infections are linked with seizures, higher future risk of shunt infection and malfunction, and reduced intelligent quotient and school performance. This retrospective study describes the clinical features, pathogens, and outcomes of 475 patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections over 8 years. We performed 496 shunt placements or revisions in patients up to 70 years of age. There were 29 shunt infections (6.1%). Fever and decreased level of consciousness were the most common clinical features in adults, and fever and abdominal symptoms and signs were common in pediatrics. About 87% of infections occurred throughout the first 2 months after insertion. Staphylococcus areus represented 13.7% of isolated pathogens compared with 34.4% with Staphylococcus epidermidis. Each infection has been treated with external ventriculostomy drainage and intravenous antibiotics. The new shunt has been placed at new site after at least 5 days of 3 sterile spinal fluid cultures." @default.
