- W2323926503 abstract "STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a “boot camp” for first-year residents to assess their level of proficiency in departmental basic competencies. METHODS: First-year residents were paired with upper-levels for a shift on labor and delivery before their first rotation. Proficiency in competencies, including history and physical examination skills (H&P), use of the electronic medical record system (EMRS), rounding and handoffs, and documentation was evaluated to determine the level of supervision required. Questionnaires were given to all residents 3 weeks later for evaluation purposes. RESULTS: All first-year residents felt that boot camp promoted decreased anxiety, better preparation for first shift and increased EMRS proficiency. Interestingly, 71% noted that it helped them identify areas needing improvement in H&P skills. All upper-level residents surveyed agreed that this prepared new residents for their first shift, 87.5% noticed decreased anxiety, 75% advancement in EMRS use, and 62.5% recognized areas of improvement in H&P skills. Eighty-seven percent of all residents agreed it should continue annually. Duty-hour violations and patient-care efficiency metrics between July and October will be compared with previous years as a hard outcome measure. CONCLUSION: New academic years face steep learning curves and inefficiencies that negatively affect patient safety, efficiency and duty hours. The current “boot camp” decreased anxiety of new residents and better prepared them for the first day of residency. Furthermore, it provided an objective tool for the program director to better determine the level of individual supervision required.
