Drnevich--We have the changing of the guard as Paul Knodel becomes the Technical Editor of the Geotechnical Testing Journal (GTJ) starting with the March t990 issue. Paul is the Chief of the Geotechnical Services Branch at the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. I have known Paul since 1974 when I spent a sabbatical leave at the Bureau. He is a knowledgeable and articulate person who will execute the duties of the Technical Editor with skill and timeliness. It seems like yesterday, but it was over four years ago that I took over from Ernie Selig, the founder and first Technical Editor. I resigned this position because my new duties as Acting Dean of Engineering at the University of Kentucky do not leave me sufficient time for the GTJ. I, like Ernie, will remain on the Editorial Board and will help out as needed. In fact, I already have volunteered to be the News Editor for Committee D-18. Previously, Carl Tockstein had that responsibility, and he has asked to not be reappointed to another term on the Editorial Board. Let me express my thanks to Carl for the fine work he has done over the past four years. GTJ has really been quite successful, and the primary reason for this has been all the authors who have provided the highquality papers that appear in each issue. I am especially indebted to all those on the Editorial Board for their responsiveness, advice, and assistance. However, there is much more to getting a journal out than reviewing and proofreading papers. I and the Editorial Board had a super team to work with at ASTM headquarters. Specifically, Kathy Greene, Manager of Acquisition and Review, her assistant, Bette Grugan, and Susan L. Gebremedhin, Editor, need to be given special recognition. Bob Morgan, Staff Manager for Committee D-18, also has been extremely helpful. The job of Technical Editor was much easier because of the strong support that was provided by Woody Shockley, the outgoing Chairman of Committee D-18, Richard Gray, outgoing First Vice-Chairman, and the other members of the D-18 Executive Subcommittee. Woody was a charter member of the Editorial Board and served on it until 1986. GTJ also is supported by Committee D-4 on Road and Paving Materials and by Committee D-35 on Geotechnical Fabrics.
