- W2324004765 abstract "Background: Around 500,000 cases of brucellosis are estimated annually while Q fever also affects people worldwide. The epidemiology and clinical sign and symptoms are quite similar for both and have been reported inAfghanistan. After an outbreak investigation of Brucellosis and Q fever in May 2011 a follow-up case control study was done in July using the cases identified in outbreak investigation. Objective was to identify the risk factors and recommend strategies of control. Methods: In June 2011, 147 cases were identified using standard case definitions in outbreak investigation from 29th May -4th June. One hundred outbreak cases were randomly selected and equal number of neighbor controls was randomly selected. Blood samples were collected for Rose Bengal Test and PCR for the confirmation of Brucellosis and Q-fever respectively. Using a structured questionnaire data was collected and Epi Info was used for data entry and analysis. Results: Cases and controls were matched based on age only. We found significant association of being housewife (OR=8.32), having sick animals (OR=3.89), being illiterate (OR: 2.27) and risk factors such as pasturing (OR=2.69), milking (OR=3.04), dunging (OR=4.50), butchering (OR=3.03), assisting deliveries (OR= 3.80) and, using unboiled milk (OR=7.04), living closely with animals (OR=4.75), contact with aborted materials (OR=3.82) and newly purchasing animals (OR=3.14) and brucellosis and Q fever diseases. Twenty eight samples were analyzed and all of them were positive for brucellosis and 27 were positive for Q fever. Conclusion: Being house wife at a higher risk was very important to strategies health education campaigns for females. As an immediate measure all cases were treated, surveillance was enhanced and health education campaigns were conducted. Zoonosis committee was established and animals were vaccinated." @default.
