Knippen and Kenneth R. Van, VJay T. Knippen and Kenneth R. Van, VPublished Online:30 Nov 2017https://doi.org/10.5465/ambpp.1974.17531498AboutSectionsPDF/EPUB ToolsDownload CitationsAdd to favoritesTrack Citations ShareShare onFacebookTwitterLinkedInRedditEmail AbstractA relatively new communication technique, known as nominal grouping (NG), has recently been developed as an approach to greater fidelity in transmitting existing information within organizations, as well as a means of generating new information. The purposes of this paper are threefold: (a) to explain briefly how this technique has evolved, (b) to describe how it has been used by the authors in stimulating greater communication effectiveness and idea generation success in a variety of organizations, and (c) to assess its potential for increased utilization in the future. Nominal grouping originated as a process designed to enhance the generation and communication of ideas relevant to program planning and problem-solving situations requiring interface by two or more groups. More recently, this model has been advocated as a means of improving overall communication effectiveness in organizations. This four-stage non-interaction/interaction group process has been employed by the authors in a number of firms; the immediate purpose in each instance was the development of management education and/or supervisory training programs which the authors had been asked to conduct. The results of two major applications of NG are reported, emphasizing certain advantages which may be expected in using the process for heterogeneous groups as compared to homogeneous groups of participants. Moreover, responses obtained from a broader sample of organizations suggest similarities among the high priority problem areas perceived and expressed through NG. Experiences, to date, indicate a strong favorable potential for increasing use of this technique.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Vol. 1974, No. 1 Permissions Metrics in the past 12 months History Published online 30 November 2017 Published in print 1 August 1974 InformationCopyright of Academy of Management Journal is the property of Academy of Management and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder’s express written permission.
