- W2324194818 abstract "THE NATURE and state of the family has long been a major concern in the United States. It has been apparent in the literature and criticism since the Puritan arrival in the seventeenth century and may be followed thereafter. However, the family has not been a major concern of American historians. As Edward Saveth reminds us, in the 1962 Presidential Address of the American Historical Association, Carl Bridenbaugh spoke of the need for research in the neglected field of American family history and suggested that the profession assign a priority to this general area. Saveth, in 1969, concluded that apart from some impressive work in historical demography, the situation has not altered. (1) In 1971, we are witness to a rise in family studies, as viewed in the work of Joseph F. Kett, John Demos, Philip Greven, Jr., and the recent issue of the Journal of Interdisciplinary History (Autumn, 1971). Various methodological approaches are apparent in this research. Some of it rests on the quantitative basis of family reconstitution, some on the adaptation of Eriksonian stages of the life cycle, while others have examined the child-rearing literature, memoirs, and medical-psychological literature of their period. Of special interest is the mid-nineteenth century. This essay will examine the state of child and adolescent dependence among families in Boston in 1860. (2) Dependence here is viewed broadly to take into account the relationships between the family, the school, and work. The conceptual framework is derived from the recent studies by William E. Bridges, Joseph Kett, and John and Virginia Demos; (3) this will be developed below. But first let us consider the empirical evidence." @default.
