- W2324255064 abstract "As an electron pair donor solvent, tetrahydrofuran (THF) forms binary solvent mixtures which appear to be dielectric continua as well as those which are highly structured. The first is represented by the THF: cyclohexane system whereas the second is illustrated by the isopolar hydrogen bond donor-acceptor pair, methanol: THF. The approximate formation constant for the 1:1 complex of methanol: THF is 17.5 (at 250C) and the nonlinear trend in dielectric constant of the mixed solvent conforms to a rational function in mole fraction. Restrictions for the Kirkwood-Onsager continuum equation when applied to cosolvents were examined as well using both simulated data and the carbon tetrachloride: mesitylene solvent system. A preceding study examined briefly some of the problems associated with the dielectric continuum assumption as a representation of medium effects when applied to electrolytic processes and reaction kinetics in binary solvent mixtures (Kolling, 1990). In that report two criteria were proposed for the selection of cosolvent systems which might behave as dielectric continua. First, the composite polarity of the binary mixture, p,, should conform to the additivity rule of equation 1 in which the individual polarities (pi) and mole fractions (Xi) of the i-th components are the essential determinants." @default.
